American Driving VS. European Driving

Driving in the United States is a lot different than driving in Europe. Because of this, it makes sense that the defensive driving courses are also different. A defensive driving course in the United States can do one or two things. It can help you get a discount on your driving and auto insurance or it can help you dismiss a ticket. In both parts of the world, the course is designed to help you become a safer and more responsible driver.

How Driving in Europe Differs from Driving in the United States

Before you can drive in Europe, you need to know what the main differences are between driving there and in the United States. These are the main things you can expect to be different:

  • Speed Limits – It will not take long for you to notice that the speed limits are given in kilometers per hour instead of miles per hour. This is because they use the metric system in Europe. That is not the only thing that is different about the speed limits. In Europe, you will also find that they have dynamic speed limit areas where the actual speed limits can vary depending on the time of the day and the volume of traffic. Instead of having a set speed limit for a road all the time, these can be changed whenever it is necessary. It is important to keep an eye on these changes to ensure you are not going over the speed limit. For those visiting New York, it would be wise to check out a NY road trip planner.
  • Traffic Cameras – In a lot of areas, you will likely not see a lot of cops that are clocking the speed of drivers. While this does still happen, there are a lot more traffic cameras that are used for this purpose. If you are caught driving over the speed limit, it is likely that you will be mailed a ticket instead of getting one in the moment from a police officer that pulls you over.
  • Roundabouts – There are more roundabouts here in the United States than there used to be but not nearly as many as you will find in Europe. Instead of 4-way stops that we are used to here in the states, you will see a lot of roundabouts. Because of this, you need to make sure that you understand how they work and the process for yielding to other drivers on the road. You do not want to start driving in Europe without it because if you do not know how to use a roundabout, you could easily get into an accident.
  • Bicycle Lanes – In Europe, you will also find a lot of bicycle lanes. In addition to the main roads, there will be spaces for bicycles which means it is important to watch out for these people and share the road with them. In fact, bicycles are a very popular way of getting around all over Europe which is one of the reasons that you will see more of them. You will also find more motorcycles on the road. It is important to be more aware of your surroundings and yield to bicycles on the road whether or not there is a special lane for them.
