I don’t go Back To School shopping!
Yep there I said it! I am that mean mom that refuses to replace my children’s wardrobe for another one just because society says we have to. I know people that spend hundreds of dollars for new clothes. Not because their kids need them but because it’s a new school year. It shocks me especially when they are constantly saying how broke they are. Really? Does that make any sense?
We tend to buy the kids clothes as they need them throughout the year. I will stock up on certain things during great sales but we live on hand me downs. When someone offers a bag of clothes, we are all over it. The kids think it’s Christmas again. We go through their clothes and either put some aside for their younger siblings or we pass them to someone else who could use them. It’s great!
This year, they will be getting new socks and possibly shoes. Before the weather cools off, we will get their winter items and make sure they all have jackets. It’s a relief that I don’t have to fit in a day or two of shopping at this time. How much on average do you spend on Back To School shopping?

clothes only? seriously less than $30 per kid… and that’s only if they need shoes… (if they want pricier shoes than that I make them buy ‘em…) I got away with spending $9 on the youngest yesterday (two shirts filled out her wardrobe nicely) and $20 on the eldest (hey, he actually WANTED to go to the thrift store) Today? shoes for DS#3 and jeans for my older daughter…
My teenager always gets one new outfit (from head to toe), before school starts. Being 15 he has certain brands that of course he wants. But, he also doesn’t have a lot of clothes, he would rather wash his own clothes 3 times a week and mix and match his favorite pieces.
The little man doesn’t need anything new for school this year. He gets the majority of his clothes from my sister, she has great taste and everything she sends is what her son was wearing to school before he outgrew it. My daughter on the other hand will be needing new clothes. She’s been living in sandals and strappy dresses for months and needs more school appropriate clothing and shoes. I won’t spend a lot though, I’m refuse to pay full price for anything

Tonya I get it! My 12 year old gets hand me downs from my sister. She ends up with name brand clothes so it works out great! I also hate paying full price for things! LOL

I know the feeling! I don’t buy new clothes- though since Rea wears uniforms I have to buy a few things. But, other then that, I usually get clothes from her cousin that’s a few years older and then Kaylee gets Reagan’s old clothes- we LOVE hand-me-downs.

We buy new shoes, backpacks, supplies and a few new outfits, but we do not go all out. My kids have so many nice clothes from hand me downs it just isn’t needed to go spending hundreds of dollars on each kid

You’re a SMART mom, not a mean one! Buying new clothes and new supplies each year teaches our children WASTE!
BTW, I have a fun new column you’ll enjoy – especially the video at the beginning…it’s simply called “Summer Is Over” (http://ow.ly/6fC7t).
Can’t wait to see you, Gina, at #DadChat on Thursdays, 6-7 pm, PST!

I am the same way. I only buy the clothes or footwear that needs to be replaced. I can’t afford to fit both of them out head to toe in brand new/brand name clothes. The only brand name clothing my kids own are hand me downs. I welcome hand me downs, it’s not as though anyone knows but us right?
i know some women who claim to be poor yet buy all new clothes for school each year. Well i, for one, welcome hand me downs & always will.
