November is Prematurity Awareness Month. Meet my preemie

Our story started about 8 1/2 months ago. At 33 weeks, my labor had started. I passed it off as just something that would quit. When it didn’t, I called a wonderful friend to take me to the hospital 50 miles away. We called my husband who was 250 miles away from the hospital. He was quite the wreck. When we go to the hospital, I told them that my contractions were 10 minutes apart. They hooked me up and discovered that just like previous labors, I wasn’t feeling my contractions. They were 2-3 minutes apart and pretty strong. My cervix was changing too. They began medications to stop my labor while my husband tried to get to us. We began asking for prayers. I needed to get to 34 weeks to safely deliver with my doctor and my hospital. If labor couldn’t be stopped, we would be transported another 50 miles.

Even though we were scared, I was in good spirits. They started steroids to help his lungs. They took ultrasounds to check his weight. They continued to pump me with medications to stop contractions. When they got everything stabilized, I had a choice. I could stay in the hospital until delivery which meant I could be there for over a month or I could stay nearby. I was not allowed to go home. I was not allowed to go anywhere that would cause any kind of stress. The goals were clear. 1 week and then it would be day to day.

I would have never guessed the depression that would soon be lingering. I’ve been on bedrest before and for a lot longer. This should have been no different. But it was. I was away from my babies. I was blessed to have family that could stay with them but I needed them too. Of course, my Grandma brought them as often as she could. I also had my wonderful husband with me as well as his brother.

Then at 35 weeks, my water broke! Stay tuned for the rest of our story! It will be live on Monday, November 22.

  2. Thanks for sharing this story, it’s never easy having a preemie. 34 weeks is a magical number. Glad you were surrounded with loved ones, even though you weren’t with your kiddos.
