Coffee Break With Mama. Homeschool Vs. Public School

Before we get started, tell me what is in your cup this morning? I’m drinking my new favorite Pumpkin Spice. With Starbucks so far away, this definitely fulfills any craving of Pumpkin Spice Latte at home! I’m sure this is a huge debate. Personally I support anyone’s decision and believe it’s whatever is best. I have seen some home school students that are socialized better than those who attend public school. No matter what your choice of school is, some students failed. I am not here to tell you what you should do with your child, I am here to share my story of what is best for mine.

Ashley has been in one school since Kindergarten. She just began 6th grade. Ever since she was in Kindergarten, I thought she seemed behind. When she would do homework, something didn’t seem to add up. But she was doing well enough in school. I was told when she was about 4 that she had officially outgrown her hearing loss. Throughout school, she had passed her hearing tests so I had no reason to worry right? WRONG! At a physical, we discovered that she may still have a hearing loss. We scheduled a meeting with an audiologist. She has a mild low frequency hearing loss in her left ear. GASP the same diagnosis she has had since she was born. The same diagnosis that has been missed.

After the diagnosis, I asked that the school do something to accommodate her hearing loss. It’s mild enough to not need a hearing aid yet. She just needed a teacher to talk AT her and not at the board. We also wanted her to remain close to the front of the room.  The problem was solved. She started understanding the concepts a lot better. But recently she has suffered again. This is creating problems when trying to get homework done. It also means her grades are failing.

This is just one factor that has influenced our recent decision to withdraw her from school and begin the process of homeschooling.  I knew it would require patience and a lot of it as well as discipline. I am no saint. I am far from disciplined or as patient as I would like to be. But I am not letting it stop me. In the beginning and throughout her school years, it will be a learning process for both of us. My biggest fear in this decision was actually the lack of support. I didn’t want to deal with criticism or rude comments. This was not a decision made lightly. I have been praying about it for months. It was always something that I knew I had to do. So I finally listened and was surprised by the support I have been given.

We are going to do the K12 program. It is a program that amazes me because there was no way I would be able to afford homeschooling. Thanks to this program, that is not an issue. They are supplying all materials that we need to give her the quality education she deserves. The plan is to get her into a routine and after Christmas, we will get Isabelle started as well. I urge you to follow your own hearts and if you want to do homeschooling, do it!

This is a sponsored post but the information is solely my own.

  1. I hope Ashley loves it! I’ve heard so many good things about homeschooling and I know you will do wonderfully at it Gena!

  2. I homeschooled Brianna for the second half of kindergarten and all of first grade but she is back in regular school this year for second grade. I loved homeschooling but I was not as disciplined as I should have been. I wish I had known about the K12 program early on but I didn’t really find out much about it until halfway thru first grade. I did a lot of it on my own but we also used a website, time4learning.com for the majority of her school work. We went on tons of field trips and did not use a rigid schedule. The schedule was our main downfall. We would do 1 – 2 hour blocks of work then a break then we would do another 1 – 2 hour block of work etc throughout the day. I did not set time limits for her work, when everthing was completed she could play, if it took her all day then she didn’t get to play as much. I did not have a lot of support and I found that a lot of the families in our homeschool group were way different than we are. We had many ups and downs during that time. Reading was the hardest for us. I used hooked on phonics as well as time4learning but she got to a certain point and just didn’t “get it” after that. By spring, I knew something had to change because it was a constant battle to get school done. This was when I began learning about K12 and I liked what I saw. To begin with I decided that I was going to do the online virtual public school (K12). At this point, I still didn’t have much support. Everyone kept telling me that all of her behavior problems was due to homeschooling and our lack of a rigid schedule. My defense was that we did have a schedule, it just wasn’t a normal 7 – 2 school schedule. Our “classroom” ranged from the kitchen table, to the livingroom, to the park some times in the car between doctor’s appointments and even in a hotel when we went out of town. Of course I was told that I put everything ahead of my daughter’s education that that I “fit school in around everything else”. That was not true, my daughter’s education was my number 1 priority. So anyway, back to spring when I was making the decisions for second grade schooling. I knew my daughter had a hard time with reading (even though she excelled in math and science) so we had to do something different. We opted to let her return to regular public school. I will admit, it was the best decision for our family at the time. Brianna is a social butterfly and even though we socialized a lot, she lacked friends her age. She returned to regular school in August. The first week was horrible! Her teacher constantly sent home notes that she was way behind, that she couldn’t keep up, etc. I had a meeting with that teacher and was told that my daughter needed to repeat first grade because she was sure that “we didn’t cover everything she needed in first grade.” At that point I had a meeting with the principal. He looked at her classwork and said that he didn’t feel that she needed to repeat first grade but she did need to be in a different classroom (remember, this was the first week of school). So we moved her and she was immediately able to keep up with her classmates. She does still have difficulty reading but this teacher has her going to the reading assist lab for 45 minutes every morning. She is making amazing progress in everything including reading and I think she will be on target by the end of the year. So basically, make sure that you log eveything that you do. Keep accurate records of all assignments (I used homeschooltracker.com). By using the K12 virtual public school, you shouldn’t have the issues that we had with them wanting to argue whether or not we did grade appropriate work. I wish you and Ashley the best of luck. I hope this is the answer to your prayers. Please keep me updated and let me know how things are going.

  3. Our county is a huge homeschool county. And it’s not because the schools are bad. The school in my small town is actually very good. I have many friends who have made the choice to homeschool their children. While I love my friends and their children, all but 2 of those families have children that are somewhat anti social and at least one of the children in their family are a little behind. But, even knowing that, I am still not opposed to homeschooling. Should something occur in our local school that bothered me, or should my children ever need personal assistance, I wouldn’t think twice about homeschooling them. The only reason I do not do it at this time is because I know that I do NOT have the discipline it takes. I wish I did. You have made the right choice in praying about it. God will not direct you wrong. Bless you!
