Myles update from Echocardiogram
I’m sorry for not getting this out sooner. I had a lot to process as well as being a tad busy. We weren’t expecting the results until Friday. Myles handled the echocardiogram extremely well. He was awake from about 8 am and we started letting him go to sleep at 9:15. Just as he was dozing off, the nurse came to tell us that the tech was running 30 minutes late due to an emergency coming in. Time to wake him up again. 9:50 we start to let him doze off once again. They bring us back and my nerves were starting to soar. Then they told us that he needed all his clothes off! Of course that woke him back up! Of course, his pacifier was safely sitting at home. He finally went out and it was easier to get the images they needed.
Later that afternoon, we got a call from the pediatrician. He explained that they weren’t sure exactly what they were seeing but it appears that Myles has a hole in the aorta. He said that in the womb, this hole is open and it closes upon birth. Myles didn’t close. He reassured us that it is common and that it is an easy fix and may close on its own. It is not an urgent matter, so we made an appointment for a cardiologist in Salt Lake City at Primary Children’s. He will see her July 16.
Our pediatrician didn’t put a name to this condition but we later discovered that it is called PDA or Patent Ductus Arteriosus. PDA is a congenital heart defect. This is something I have always heard a little about but never paid a lot of attention to. When I was pregnant with Myles, I heard of a little girl known as Cora. I have talked to her mom on Twitter a few times. I now know that God brought her into my life at the best time. She has been answering my questions. She is also not the only one. I am so grateful to the many people that have reached out. We know that Myles will overcome this obstacle and will grow to do great things.
Just because I have faith that he will be okay, doesn’t mean that I am not worried. I was told that my son has a hole in his heart. The only reassurances that we have is that he isn’t showing any symptoms. He nurses great and seems like a perfectly normal baby. You’d never know he had a heart condition just by looking at him. Just like any other obstacle he has had in his short little life, he will overcome it and show everyone he is a fighter.

My daughter had a hole in her heart at birth but it did close up. I was told it does close up within a year. So I hope that will go the same for Myles!! I totally can understand still being worried as it’s only natural. Went through the same feelings as you. My friends sister had a hole in heart and she grew up with it just fine. Don’t know if she ever had surgery or not as we lost touch.

Thank you Stacie. That means a lot.
Wow, look how much he has grown. He is beautiful and I am praying for you and your family as you have received this news and praying in faith that the hole will close on its own with no surgery needed!

Thank you Shirley. He is growing everyday!
Oh Gena, I’ve been thinking of you and your wee Myles. Sounds like everything will work out just fine but I’d be a worried mess too. (((HUGS))) Smooch that cuteness for me will ya?
Of course I will Heather! Thank you so much!
Gena Blake had PDA it closed on its own by 8 months. We would go once a month to the cardio for check ups. Echo and then see the cardio. He did fantastic. The only things we noticed in Blake were sometimes he would have a bit of blue coloring to his lips and he tended to run a bit colder than most kids. It is really common among babies and ecspecailly preemies. HUGS!!! I know it is scary. Hang in there.
Sarah thank you so much for sharing Blake’s story with us. Myles doesn’t have any blue coloring so that’s a huge blessing!
This heart defect definately has not stopped his growing and how adorable he is. I’m praying for Myles and all of you. Keep the faith strong.
Thank you Marj!
How scary but so glad we have modern medicine in case it doesn’t close on it’s own. We’ll keep you in our prayers.

Thank you Rachel.
He’s so precious! I know it must be hard. I didn’t want my son having a sniffle much less something serious wrong. Even now and he’ll be twenty on June 8th.
God will see him thru. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Gena! We never quite stop worrying about our kids!
((((((HUGS)))))))) hun! I will be keeping you and him in my prayers! Call me if you need to. Love you hun!

Thanks Stef!
I think I told you this, but Roo has the same little hole in her heart. She’s been doing great though, you would never know that she has anything going on in there.
Stay strong.
Yes SuZ and that helps! Hearing these stories really helps. I know he is strong.
