The Deputy’s Wife

About 4:30 this morning, I woke up to an empty bed. Stoney is currently on night shift and is generally home by 4 am. So I figured that he was working on a call. Generally that time of night, the calls are most likely someone hearing something in their yard. Something that is pretty minor especially in a small town where deer are known to hang out. Well today was different. Instead of checking out deer, my husband was sitting on a freeway waiting for a cop killer.
About 1 am, Deputy Josie Greathouse Fox was killed during a traffic stop. She was found minutes later in the road too late. Roberto Miramontes Roman is the suspect in the shooting. I have watched the news throughout the day as the police have thought they possibly had him in their sights two different times. Both times came up to nothing. They are on a manhunt to find this man and another man as a person of interest. Deputy Fox left behind a husband and 2 children after five years of service.
The community that this shooting occurred is not far from my own community where my husband is a deputy. It is a small town just like ours. A place that things like this just don’t happen! When I heard the news, my heart sank. It was way too close to home. All I could do was put on a brave front and pray for my husband and other officers today. Law enforcement officers do not get the respect or the gratitude they deserve. It really breaks my heart to see the men and women who are serving us everyday and putting their lives in danger to be taken advantage of. They give 20-30 years so we can sleep at night.
I used to think there is no way I could be a military wife. I highly respect all they do and what their spouses do. Then I became a wife to a deputy. I have realized just how much their wives go through. There are nights like tonight that I have a hard time sleeping. I have to find distractions to keep my mind from wandering. I have to wipe the tears when I can’t get a hold of him for a couple hours while he is on a call. Just so that our kids don’t see the fear. We are going on the end of his first year as a deputy and his 4th year in law enforcement. We have 20+ years to get through. I have to trust in the training he has received and trust that will bring him home. I have to trust other men and women to do their jobs to make sure he comes home safely as well.
It is a duty. I know in my heart that if something was to ever happen, I will be okay. Our kids will be okay. I know I don’t tell him enough but I am so proud of him. I can see the pride in himself when he puts that uniform and badge on. I can see the pride when he has helped in an arrest that has gotten one more dangerous person off our streets. I love him so much and even when we have our problems, I will forever be grateful.
Now please pray that they find this suspect without another officer being injured. The community also needs your prayers because they have lost a wonderful piece of themselves. To have updated information regarding this manhunt, please go to My Fox Utah. Next time you see an officer out, stop and just say thank you! They are putting everything they have on the line for you!

Well said….I hope they find that guy soon.
(hugs)
So sad
I was sad to hear this news too and have been watching it on the news! I sure hope this man is caught soon! Thanks for all our law enforcement officers and all they do for us!

This is such sad news. I too hope they find the suspect. This family and her children are in my thoughts and prayers.
Beautifully written Gena…I completely understand. You know, I still often wonder how military wives do it. Our lives are similar to theirs but fortunately we don’t have the long absences. The worry factor is always there, in our heads and in our hearts.
It breaks my heart to hear about the senseless killing of yet another officer. This needs to stop. I am so glad your hubby is okay…I will keep him and all officers in my thoughts an prayers, and will saying extra prayers for the family of the deputy who lost her life in the line of duty.

Jennifer I love having others that understand. there is no way I could handle the long absences. We do short absences for trainings and stuff. But I know he’s safe during those. It’s the DAILY fear of knowing that one day he could walk out that door and I could never see him again.
If we are in an argument and he leaves for work, it hits me really hard! What if I can’t tell him I’m sorry and I love him. It really makes you see how precious life is and that you might not have much time with them. Well here’s to another 25+ years of wine drinking and tweeting with my friends! LOL
Thank you for post, it WAS beautifully written. I am Corrections officer working for Adult Probation and Parole in Fillmore, and also married to a Millard County Deputy. We both worked with Josie here and there over the years. She was a keeper. I counted her as a friend and a woman to be very proud of in and out of uniform.

I just realized who your husband is. We come from the same town. In fact, I babysat him a few times.

Ok Stephanie I am laughing so hard and my head hurts! Stoney is possibly going up on Monday during the funeral if he is needed. He does have to work here that night so they might have off duty officers go up but I’m not sure. It is such a small world!
Stephanie, it is such a small world! Stoney is going to text the Sheriff on Sunday to find out if they need him up there or not for the funeral. My heart breaks for her family!
