Behind The Badge…Get your own get out of jail free card

340x_speedingticketA lot of people think there are some ways to get out of a speeding ticket.

-Sorry Officer my Grandma just died and I am rushing to the hospital. (Seriously, do you want to kill yourself or someone else in the process?)

-I think you are wrong, my speedometer only says I was doing 2 miles over the speed limit. (WHAT? Are you seriously going to challenge the officer on the road?)

-I was turning the radio up and accidentally hit the gas pedal. (and how much have you had to drink tonight?)

The excuses are endless. Some are priceless and maybe a few even comical. The ones that really piss me off are not the ones that I hear from my husband. They are the ones I hear from family members.

-Oh officer, you work with my brother, son or WHATEVER.

Seriously, if you are in trouble for something minor like a speeding ticket, DO NOT start talking to them about your relative that is an officer. First, it is tacky! Second, if you are related to an officer, you should know and follow the law. Third, it reflects on him!

Do you really think that you are above the law by association? I have news for you! Even the officer isn’t above the law. My husband very recently even pulled over the mayor! We live in a small community so everyone knows who the mayor is and probably has regular contact with him. My husband was quite shocked when the car pulled over and there was the mayor sitting quietly. Since the mayor isn’t above the law, why should a regular citizen be just because they are related?

Moral of the story, Get your own damn get out of jail free card!

  1. This really pisses me off because my husband is a police officer as well. And while there may be a once or twice courtesy for being the spouse of an officer, it does NOT extend to other family members.

The truth is, dropping names like that can not only put the officer’s job in jeopardy but it reflects very badly upon him/her and makes you look like a jackass for trying to get out of a ticket when you were clearly in the wrong.

If you don’t want to pay the fine, don’t break the law or take it to court.

    • Cat, I love the way you think! It also feeds into society’s belief that officer’s are above the law or better than everyone else.

  2. You know…it is very easy to think of an excuse to give to a cop while you are sitting there thinking “oh jeez, my insurance is going up, my wife/husband is going to kill me, etc”…But you know what? We all have choices in life. We CHOOSE to speed…or we CHOOSE to not look down at our speedometer. Not the police officers fault.

As a society we need to accept responsibilty for our actions regardless of who are family members are. I totally agree with you!

    • Katie, I think that is a lot of our society’s problem! They don’t know how to accept responsibility! They have to blame it on someone else.

  3. I’ve been pulled over twice during my marriage and I’ve never even mentioned my husband is a cop. I was too embarrassed to say anything! lol
My fave excuse I’ve seen: “I had a really big wedgie and when I was pulling it out I hit the gas…” gross lol

    • LOL Tori, I can see a man saying that! What an idiot. I would also be too embarrassed! We live in such a small community that any officer would know me. So no matter what, my husband will find out.

  4. My ex speeds all the time. I thought he would quit after he was involved in a collision where the other driver died, but it had no effect. We had a car that had no spedometer, but he KNEW how fast he should be going. We got pulled over and he said, “I was just going with the flow of traffic.” The officer replied, “No, sir. You were leading the pack.” I had to call the police one time because a “friend” of mine was going ballistic on me outside my house and her husband was an officer in a small town of about 3,000 and she was so mad at me for calling the police. But when someone is banging on your door and screaming at you to “come out” for 10 minutes, it’s time for help. She was mad because I didn’t want to help with a Cub Scout project.
